Same county, different trees

Maury County sits in the Nashville Basin, where limestone lies close under much of the ground and soils are often thin and rocky, with deeper soils in the river and creek bottoms. On the thin ground, trees root wide and shallow and can blow over whole in wet, windy weather. Along the Duck River and its creeks, big sycamores and bottomland trees face bank erosion instead. The newer subdivisions around Spring Hill were mostly planted with young ornamentals; the historic neighborhoods of Columbia have the county's oldest yard hardwoods.

Whose rules apply?

Columbia, Spring Hill and Mount Pleasant are separate cities with their own ordinances, and Spring Hill also reaches into Williamson County. Culleoka, Santa Fe, Hampshire and Williamsport are unincorporated, so county rules apply there. Before a big removal, ask the pro which rules apply on your street and check with your HOA if you have one. Depending on your address, your power may come from Columbia Power & Water Systems or from another utility, such as an electric cooperative; the name on your bill tells you which.
